Requirements
Jagex supplies a separate, free dedicated-server package for 64-bit Windows and Linux. The official capacity guidance was published for version 0.11: 2 GB of RAM plus 1 GB per player, with up to six players at that time. Treat that as dated sizing guidance rather than a newly confirmed version 1.0 limit.
Home-hosted servers require reachable UDP networking. The first server uses UDP port 7777 by default, the second 7778, and so on. Every firewall or router between the host and the public internet must allow the selected port. Some ISPs use carrier-grade networking or otherwise block inbound forwarding.
Install with SteamCMD
Install the dedicated server into a folder you control:
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:\MyInstallFolder +login anonymous +app_update 4019830 +quit
Steam App ID 4019830 is the official dedicated-server package, not the playable client. Start RSDragonwilds.exe from the installed server folder. Jagex recommends these launch options so the console displays useful status information:
-log -NewConsole
You can also obtain RuneScape: Dragonwilds - Dedicated Servers directly through Steam instead of SteamCMD.
Configure the server
Stop the server before editing configuration; Jagex warns that changes made while it is running can be lost.
| System | Configuration path |
|---|---|
| Linux | RSDragonwilds/Saved/Config/Linux/DedicatedServer.ini |
| Windows | RSDragonwilds/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/DedicatedServer.ini |
Windows users may need to copy the Linux configuration template and create the WindowsServer file. Set these mandatory values:
- Owner ID: your Dragonwilds Player ID, shown at the bottom of the in-game Settings menu. The server will not start without it.
- Server Name: the public server name.
- Default World Name: the name used when a default world is created.
- Admin password: grants access to Server Management from the pause-menu Settings page.
The optional world password overrides a password stored in the world. Keep both passwords private and use different values.
Find and join the server
Open the Worlds screen, select the Public tab and search for the exact world name. The search is case-sensitive. If the world appears but cannot be joined, UDP port forwarding is the first thing to check.
If the server does not appear:
- compare the version at the top of the server log with the client version shown in game;
- verify the world name and every mandatory configuration value;
- confirm the configured UDP port is reachable;
- inspect
RSDragonwilds/Saved/Logs/RSDragonwilds.log.
An update or hotfix can make the server and client versions differ. Update the server package and restart it before changing unrelated networking settings.
Move an existing world
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Back up everything in
RSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegames. - Clear the server’s Savegames folder only after confirming the backup.
- Copy the local
.savfile from%LOCALAPPDATA%\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveGamesinto the server’sRSDragonwilds/Saved/Savegamesfolder. - Start the server.
At startup, the server loads the latest .sav file. If none exists, it creates a default Standard world. To host a new Custom or Creative world, create and enter that world once in the normal game, exit, then copy its save using the same stopped-server procedure.
Backups and user roles
Back up .sav files while the server is stopped and store at least one copy outside the live server directory. A timestamp in the backup filename makes recovery easier.
Dedicated servers recognize three roles:
- Owner: the player whose ID matches Owner ID; can ban and unban users.
- Admin: a player who entered the admin password; can ban online regular users but cannot unban.
- Regular user: a normal connected player.
Do not post the configuration file publicly because it can contain administrative credentials.
