The first-hour route

Do not skip the tutorial on a first character. It establishes the survival loop in a fixed order and gives you the tools needed to start the main adventure.

  1. Speak to the Wise Old Man at the expedition camp.
  2. Visit Doric outside the temple. Collect Dirty Water from the marked ponds and pick Redberries on the way when convenient.
  3. Gather loose Ash Logs and Stone around Temple Woods. Enter Build mode with B, place a Crafting Table and make the requested Stone Club.
  4. Follow the road to Vannaka. Kill the rats at the abandoned windmill and collect four Raw Rat Meat.
  5. Build a Campfire. Cook two Roast Rats and boil Dirty Water into Clean Water before returning to Vannaka. His tutorial reward includes a Stone Axe and Dagger.
  6. Find Zanik at the ruined campsite. Mine Rune Essence, build a Rune Altar, then craft the Air and Astral Runes requested by the tutorial.
  7. Use the Spellbook and spell wheel to cast Axtral Projection. Once Doric, Vannaka and Zanik are finished, travel to Bramblemead Village and speak to the Wise Old Man again.

Those steps come directly from Jagex’s current getting-started guide. Keyboard prompts are PC defaults; console controls are shown in the in-game interface.

Before leaving Temple Woods

Carry a small reserve instead of using every resource immediately:

  • clean water and cooked food;
  • a repaired melee weapon plus the Stone Axe and Pickaxe;
  • spare Ash Logs and Stone for an emergency Campfire or basic construction;
  • enough runes to use the utility spells you have unlocked;
  • free inventory space for quest items.

Watch the hydration and sustenance meters. Jagex states that very low food or water causes health loss and prevents normal recovery. Eating and drinking before a long fight is safer than waiting for both meters to empty.

Map and quest habits that save time

Open the map from the menu or press M on PC. Exploration removes fog, primary quests remain visible, and secondary quests can be toggled individually. Right-click places a personal marker; middle-click sends a temporary ping to everyone in the world.

Use markers for three things: a blocked route, a resource you cannot yet harvest and the safest return path. Do not rely on an old interactive map for an exact coordinate when the current quest marker already points to the updated objective.

Your first base

Build for function before decoration. A compact early shelter should hold a claimed sleeping place, storage, food preparation and the crafting stations required by the active quest. Keep the first base close enough to the opening route that a death or forgotten item does not create a long recovery trip.

Avoid spending all early materials on several weapon families. Choose one dependable combat style, keep its equipment repaired and maintain a basic ranged option for enemies that are difficult to reach safely.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Drinking Dirty Water without processing it: the tutorial explicitly teaches boiling it into Clean Water.
  • Ignoring the compass: active quest markers show direction and distance.
  • Overloading the inventory: leave room for quest objects and regional materials.
  • Entering a new biome without a return plan: reveal the route, place a marker and establish travel access before carrying rare gear deep into unknown territory.
  • Following Early Access numbers as permanent facts: healing, combat and progression systems changed repeatedly before version 1.0.

What to do next

Continue the Wise Old Man’s objectives in Bramblemead and let the primary quest introduce later regions. Use the quest index for progression order, the map guide for regional hazards and the crafting guide before committing rare materials.
